Nana's Bonnag

A traditional Manx fruit loaf, simple to make and lovely with a cup of tea. A treasured family recipe.

Nana’s Bonnag

Ingredients

  • 200g self-raising flour (sieved)
  • 75g margarine
  • 75g caster sugar
  • ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 100g sultanas
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 large egg
  • Splash of milk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 150C.
  2. Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl.
  3. Rub in the margarine75g margarine.
  4. Add the caster sugar75g caster sugar, bicarbonate of soda¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda, sultanas100g sultanas, and salt. Roughly mix together.
  5. Add the egg1 large egg and mix in.
  6. Mix in a little milkSplash of milk at a time, until the mixture just falls off the spoon.
  7. Spoon into a lined loaf tin.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes. Check with a clean, sharp knife. It is done when no mixture sticks to the knife.
  9. Transfer to a cooling rack.
